During the second half of the 19th century, throughout the reign of Napoleon III the restoration of the monarchy brought the royal theme back to fashion.

Sevres released a series of sets of cups and saucers richly decorated with gold and enamel depicting exquisitely painted portraits of kings, queens, and aristocrats.

The original 18th century Sevres porcelain cups and saucers were taken from the factories’ storages for decoration to connect them with the historical events and the subjects that were chosen to be portrayed.

The complexity of design and expensiveness of the production made those sets hardly affordable due to the high cost.

These cups and saucers were often used as lavish presents given to the members of the Court, high officials, and foreign diplomats.

These types of sets became very popular among the collectors of French porcelain for its unique design and unsurpassed quality, especially valued are the cups and saucers embellished with the crest of the House of Bourbon.
