This particular Memento Mori still-life painting is a scene after light supper with shattered eggshells, partially bitten dry bread, emptied wine jar with a broken glass and after-meal cigarette. With the Latin phrase “Remember you must die,” the viewer is reminded of their mortality, of the brevity and fragility of human in the face of God and nature.
Disoriented yet well- composed objects enough tell a story of the end of a day as well as a life, which goes on with daily needs of gratification and easement and suggests an eventual encounter of the ultimate end – mortality – as if the cigarette is completely exhausted.
